gridX releases report on connectivity gap in single-family homes

UK homeowners miss up to £1,700 a year if they don’t smartify their energy assets

  • Around 5.4 million electric vehicles (EVs) and EV chargers, home batteries, heat pumps and photovoltaic (PV) systems are installed across the UK which, when intelligently connected, can generate savings of up to £1,700 per household per year.
  • Smart meter (approximately 11.3 million) versus dynamic tariff (around 0.8 million) adoption divergence shows that flexibility follows on from connectivity as a first step.
  • Negative price hours increased 4.8-fold from 2021 to 2025, from 40 to 190 (CAGR: 48%), confirming the increasing grid load caused by untapped connectivity potential.

Aachen, Germany, September 7, 2026 – The UK has a high uptake of dynamic tariffs and strong electrification, particularly in terms of heat pump adoption, but the flexibility breakthrough awaits. To analyse this landscape, gridX, one of Europe’s leading home energy management system (HEMS) providers and flexibility aggregators, has published its latest Connectivity Report, highlighting how connectivity technologies and partnerships can transform fragmented energy assets into scalable energy solutions to unlock significant savings potential across the value chain.


With growing DER adoption comes great flexibility and earnings potential

To connect the growing number of distributed energy resources (DERs) in a smart and sustainable way, homeowners have two pathways. The first is the integration of a single energy asset like an electric vehicle or a battery via cloud connectivity only. The huge potential of this is confirmed by the UK’s consistently growing number of newly registered EVs and the higher propensity of households with EVs to adopt dynamic tariffs (53%) versus all housholds (16%). The second route is via the installation of a physical gateway, which is required for more advanced optimization of homes with multiple energy assets and providing offline functionality for up to ten days. The gridBox serves as the basis for so-called value stacking, combining self-consumption optimization and dynamic tariff optimization, with potential earnings of up to around £1,150 a year. If the household also makes its controllable consumption devices available for flexibility services, it can generate an additional £400 to £700 in value, which from 2027 can be stacked onto the other use cases to bring the total potential earnings to around £1,700 at peak times.

Partnerships with manufacturers ensure interoperability and convenience

In-house surveys among installers of gridX’s white-label solution showed that a full scan of all network components takes less than 90 seconds on average and that 63% of gridBox installations are completed in less than ten minutes. As a result, they rated the ease of installation at 4.1 out of 5 stars on average. These results are made possible by gridX’s high level of interoperability, supporting over 500 devices from more than 50 international manufacturers (OEMs). Devices from ‘Ready for gridX’ partners, such as SolaX or Huawei, have 75% fewer support tickets than non-‘Ready for gridX’ OEMs thanks to pre-validated integrations and proactive firmware updates.


Cybersecurity keeps energy supply stable

As the energy sector becomes increasingly digitized, the risk of cyberattacks is also rising: 23 cyberattacks have been carried out on the European energy sector since 2022. Globally, such an attack is estimated to have cost the sector an average of $5.2 million (equivalent to €4.5 million) in 2026. gridX’s strong commitment to cybersecurity and stability is confirmed by its recent above average Cybervadis rating of 895 out of 1,000 points and its average platform availability of 99.99% (H1/2026).
