After successful scaling of the EMS provider, Tobias Mitter moves to E.ON Germany as CIO

gridX uses strong market position and technical foundation to enter next stage of commercial expansion

  • After two and a half years as CTO at gridX, Tobias Mitter will take over the position of CIO at E.ON Germany on September 1, 2025, while Tim Steinmetz will remain Managing Director at gridX, ensuring continuity.
  • Following a huge increase in managed renewable energy assets during Mitter's time as CTO, gridX is leveraging its strong market position and technology base for the next phase of commercial growth.
  • As an independently managed portfolio company of E.ON, gridX will continue to scale with numerous partners and cover new use cases across Europe.

Aachen, August 26, 2025 – gridX, Europe's leading smart energy company, is strategically realigning its management team. Tobias Mitter, currently Chief Technology Officer and Managing Director at gridX, will join E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH, the German sales unit within the E.ON Group, as Chief Information Officer (CIO) on September 1, 2025. The personnel change is an opportunity to build on the positive momentum of recent years and prepare for the future. The management team at gridX will be expanded in the coming months to optimally position the company for the next phase of growth. Following successful development under the influence of Tobias Mitter in recent years and under the continued leadership of long-standing Managing Director Tim Steinmetz, gridX is now focusing on stability and growth.

Over the past two and a half years, Tobias Mitter has played a key role at gridX in establishing the company as the industry benchmark for energy management. During this time, the number of devices connected to the XENON energy management system (EMS) has increased 13-fold. Today, XENON handles around 50 million API requests and 600 million energy management decisions every day – with capacity for rapid ongoing growth. At the same time, gridX increased platform stability and launched numerous new features, including dynamic tariff optimization, grid-friendly control in accordance with Paragraph 14a and 9 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), and flexibility services that enable the aggregated flexibility of household appliances to be used in the intraday or balancing markets.

“It was great to play an active role in shaping this success story and establishing gridX as the industry benchmark for energy management,” says Tobias Mitter. “Together with our team of experts, we have laid the foundation for long-term stable growth. Now is the right time for the company to bring smart, affordable energy to the mass market with the gridX ecosystem.”

Tim Steinmetz, Managing Director and Chief Growth Officer at gridX: "Tobias has helped set gridX's course to make our solutions scalable and future-proof. His move to E.ON in a management position is a great development for him after doing an outstanding job for us. I am delighted to now continue his work together with a new management team and our numerous partners across Europe to establish stable, future-proof energy management systems."

New momentum for gridX covering more of the market

gridX is selectively expanding its expertise into new avenues to expand access to energy management and continue to grow despite a challenging market landscape. The strong growth in devices connected to XENON – photovoltaic systems, batteries, heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers – reflects new partnerships across multiple markets, as well as the trend towards more complex multi-asset sites. The average home or electric vehicle charging site connected to gridX’s EMS has over three devices, a use case that requires a locally-installed gateway, aka. the gridBox. The local gateway is also crucial for future-proof features, such as flexibility services, which enhance grid stability and open up new revenue streams for energy providers and end customers. Complementing this local gateway approach for advanced use cases, gridX has also successfully completed pilot projects that enable cloud-to-cloud optimization, ideal for households with single assets. This allows gridX and its partners to cover the full spectrum of energy management use cases. In addition, successful pilots have been completed enabling grid operators to directly access XENON’s capabilities.

The next stage of growth with continued independence

As an independently managed portfolio company of E.ON, gridX is driving forward exciting projects in numerous markets. gridX's technology and expertise form the core of E.ON's future solution for home energy management. The return of Tobias Mitter to a management position at E.ON underscores the cooperative partnership and shared vision of a decentralized energy world, with gridX's independent management remaining intact as a key success factor for the further development and scaling of solutions.
