Load management for electric logistics fleets

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly important for the logistics sector in order to make operations more sustainable. Digital energy solutions are crucial to minimize disruption and and keep costs to a minimum.

Modules used

DHL is the world's leading logistics company covering national and international parcel delivery, e-commerce shipping, freight transport and industrial supply chain management. They switched to electric logistics fleets for last-mile delivery in order to drastically reduce their carbon emissions. However, moving away from internal combustion engine cars raises the need for efficient and reliable charging infrastructure.

Sorting low weight and volume consignments for last-mile services is usually a highly automated process – this guarantees quick and cost-effective delivery to consumers' doorsteps across the world. However, such automated machinery requires uninterrupted operation in order to be effective. As a result, when installing charging infrastructure for electric logistics fleets, it is crucial that the extra electricity required does not cause overloads.

Reliable and sustainable logistics

Our XENON platform can manage loads dynamically and locally, meaning current loads at the grid connection point are monitored in real time and operation is ensured even when the internet connection is disrupted. By factoring in the load of the building, the Grid Protector module dynamically adjusts the energy flows to the charging stations to prevent the EV charging stations from impacting operations.

On top of this, XENON lowers ongoing grid tariffs by reducing peak loads and aligning it with grid operator's desired limits. This enables more EV charging stations to operate on existing infrastructure, foregoing the need for costly grid extensions.

Business continuity
Disruption was minimized by avoiding grid expansions and overloads.
Offline functionality
Locally-run load balancing is protected against network outages.
Minimized peaks
Energy loads are kept constant and grid tariffs are minimized.
Low latency
Energy monitoring and control is conducted in real time.
