Aachen, August 12, 2025 – Customers in northern Rhineland-Palatinate can now benefit from an intelligent home energy management system (HEMS) provided by the regional energy provider, Energieversorgung Mittelrhein (evm). This marks greenblocks and gridX’s first successful rollout with a ‘Stadtwerke’ (municipal utility), an important milestone in their goal of bringing smart energy management to households across Germany, particularly in rural areas. The advanced solution, "liya", is powered by gridX’s industry-leading energy management system XENON. greenblocks, a provider of comprehensive energy solutions in the Rhine-Main region, takes care of the complete go-to-market setup, including technical commissioning, training and operational support. evm contributes its own network of skilled tradespeople and sales structures to provide direct customer service and on-site installation. The scalable solution is designed for deployment by additional municipal utilities.
Advanced applications for evm customers
evm customers in and around Koblenz can now intelligently manage their energy usage with "liya": they benefit from dynamic tariffs, solar-optimized consumption, and grid-friendly control in line with §14a EnWG and §9 EEG. This allows for seamless integration and optimization of photovoltaic (PV) systems, batteries, heat pumps and wallboxes in one cohesive system – compliant with regulations, cost-effective and climate-friendly. This is made possible by combining a local gateway with cloud-based optimization. "Our new HEMS opens the door to use cases that go far beyond simple surplus charging. We are laying the foundation for a virtual power plant – and thus for innovative business models that will benefit our customers, the power system and us at evm in the long term," says Christoph Hesse, Member of the Executive Board at evm.
Nationwide expansion planned
gridX and greenblocks plan to roll out the solution across Germany in cooperation with other municipal utilities. This will give even more households access to intelligent energy, lower electricity costs and greater comfort. "With this project, we are making an important contribution to the electrification of heating and mobility in Germany, while ensuring that these new loads are integrated in a grid-friendly way," says Amelie Meixner, Head of Customer Success at gridX. "Partnerships like this, which give regional energy providers access to cutting-edge technology, are crucial: they strengthen grid stability, increase flexibility and secure new long-term revenue streams for municipal utilities," adds Meixner.
Added value for utilities: Customer loyalty and market positioning
With the HEMS "liya", energy providers like evm expand their offerings with an innovative product that can be launched in just twelve weeks – without in-house software development. The benefits go far beyond technical features: higher customer satisfaction, stronger retention, new revenue streams and a clear positioning as a digital pioneer in the local market. "We empower municipal utilities to compete technologically with major providers while strengthening their trusted local presence," emphasizes Mubariz Javaid, CEO of greenblocks. "This enables them to offer modern energy solutions, open up new business areas – and most importantly, build close customer relationships and lasting loyalty."
