Berlin/Aachen/Bad Homburg, Germany, June 16, 2026 – metrify smart metering, an independent metering operator active throughout Germany, and gridX, one of Europe’s leading providers of smart home energy management systems (HEMS), announce their bilateral partnership. Effective immediately, the two scaleups are offering an integrated package consisting of an intelligent metering system (iMSys), a control box and HEMS for the German market. This package meets the legal requirements for the controllability of distributed energy resources in accordance with Paragraph 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) and Paragraph 9 of the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) and is aimed at energy retailers and independent installers. The collaboration facilitates a scalable, coordinated product offering that accelerates the adoption of smart meters and HEMS and enables households to easily participate in the energy market.
metrify and gridX join forces to digitize the energy transition
iMSys, consisting of a smart meter and a smart meter gateway, alongside a HEMS, are essential to the success of the energy transition. However, uncoordinated processes surrounding the ordering, installation and completion notice of the iMSys lead to lengthy implementation times. The two new partners, metrify and gridX, are now addressing this slow progress with a package solution comprising iMSys, a smart control box and a smart HEMS. The collaboration builds on existing partnerships between metrify and greenblocks – an installer and platform provider for digital energy solutions – as well as between greenblocks and gridX and is grounded in established processes and shared successes. As part of the collaboration, metrify installs the iMSys and the smart control box for end customers of an energy retailer or independent installer – such as the pilot partner greenblocks – and automatically notifies the local distribution network operator of this. Installers implement the HEMS for end customers and handle the final reporting of the controllable loads in accordance with Paragraph 14a EnWG, specifying the household’s market location identification number. gridX ensures the intelligent networking, control and optimization of all devices – both locally and in the cloud. The integrated solution is now available to energy retailers and independent installers in Germany via either partner.
Households, energy retailers and installers all stand to benefit
The streamlined and straightforward installation process has a clear contact person for every step, ultimately enabling end customers to enter the energy market more quickly. The HEMS ensures all devices comply with Paragraph 14a EnWG (Module 3) and Paragraph 9 EEG. The future-proof solution lays the groundwork for households to benefit from dynamic electricity tariffs and time-variable grid fees, while also ensuring intelligent management of loads and grid-friendly power feed-in.
Energy retailers benefit from a coordinated, efficient and repeatable installation process. Clear responsibilities and proven handover processes eliminate effort between market participants and make on-site commissioning clear and transparent. The digital grid connection point in the household is reliably set up, as the iMSys infrastructure, HEMS, PV system and other controllable loads work together seamlessly, and grid-friendly control – including technical verification – is established immediately.
The smooth installation process, validated via the trilateral partnership, enhances efficiency for installers and technicians. It includes a proven end-to-end verification process covering system integration, compliance and connection validation – which goes beyond the purely physical installation. Furthermore, a coordinated sales approach reduces consulting efforts, the number of site visits and follow-up inquiries.
Outlook: Monetizing household flexibility
Today, millions of electric vehicles, heat pumps and home batteries (collectively referred to as “flexible loads”) are in use in German households, yet they are not connected to either an iMSys or a smart HEMS. As long as these flexible loads are not intelligently monitored and controlled, they cannot be profitably traded on a power exchange. Through their partnership, metrify and gridX also aim to unlock this untapped potential in the future, enabling gridX to aggregate household flexibilities for trading on the day-ahead and intraday markets.
Voices from the partners
Georg Gaiser, Senior Vice President of metrify, explains: “Together with gridX, we are creating a scalable offering and demonstrating how quickly the rollout of control systems can succeed when key market players collaborate. At the same time, this requires a reliable political and regulatory framework, a clear vision for control at the grid connection point and the rapid implementation of technical interfaces. Only when regulation, standards and processes are better aligned can the control rollout gain momentum on a large scale.”
Anne Bicking, CEO of gridX, adds: “Our joint offering focuses on ensuring unlimited connectivity and full optimization of all household devices. The result is a streamlined, high-impact solution that we now offer together with our trusted and fast-growing partners, metrify and greenblocks.”
Mubariz Javaid, Managing Director of greenblocks, adds: “Our work with both companies shows how robust, reliable and quick to implement their technologies are. We are therefore all the more excited to be the first installer to offer our customers this scalable, regulatory-compliant solution that combines smart meters and smart energy management with maximum savings potential.”
