Growth strategy pays off

gridX substantially increases productivity in gridBox production

  • Production figures for the IoT gateway ‘gridBox’ significantly increased in 2023.
  • Across the year, gridX expects to produce and deliver around 43,000 gridBoxes for the first time.
  • By November 22, almost 40,000 IoT gateways had already left the new production facility in Aachen.
  • The increased pace of production is set to continue in 2024.

Aachen, November 22, 2023 – Europe's leading smart energy company, gridX, has achieved a significant increase in productivity in the company's own production of the IoT gateway, the gridBox, in the 2023 financial year. For the whole of 2023, management expects around 43,000 gridBoxes to be produced and delivered to partners for the first time. By November 22, almost 40,000 gridBoxes had already left the production facility. The growing customer base of the rapidly scaling company played a major role in increasing the production volume. On top of that, further automation, an expansion of the premises and an increase in the number of production team members have made a positive contribution to the significant increase in production capacity.

The heart of the energy management system comes from Aachen

In order to meet ever-demanding production requirements, the gridX production facility moved into a new home at the end of 2022. Now it covers more than 100 square meters at the company's site in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia. A 14-person team is responsible for the production of the centerpiece of the company’s smart energy management system, the gridBox. The small device, which is installed as a central control unit locally on site and loaded with the smart energy management software, serves as a local connection to the XENON IoT platform. In general, the gridBox ensures that on-site systems, including solar systems, inverters, battery storage systems, heat pumps and charging stations for electric cars, are digitally accessible, interconnected and intelligently managed – all while maintaining the highest security standards.

Essential for the success of the energy transition

Digitizing various energy systems from different manufacturers on one platform enables holistic visualization of all energy flows at one location, as well as intelligent control and optimized utilization of all connected energy systems. This is because the smart energy management system developed by gridX not only benefits  consumers and operators, but also advances the energy transition. Several use cases are possible: optimizing the self-consumption of locally-generated solar energy ensures that electric cars, heat pumps and batteries  operate more sustainably; smart management of energy and costs for dynamic tariffs increases financial savings; and consumers become active participants in energy markets. End users can, for example, market the flexibility of their own renewable energy resources, such as batteries and solar panels. On top of this, overloads in complex charging infrastructure facilities, including large charging parks, can be effectively prevented and system failure risks minimized.

gridX growth strategy successful

Almost eight years after the company was founded, gridBox production is still taking place on home soil in Germany. The fact that this has now been ramped up significantly in 2023 once again confirms the smart energy expert's growth strategy. "gridX is currently scaling up strongly at the business level,” says gridX Managing Director and Chief Technology Officer, Tobias Mitter. “In addition to a rapidly growing team and a growing number of customers, this is also reflected in the production of the gridBox. The increase in productivity that we achieved in 2023 impressively demonstrates the relevance of smart energy management in the energy transition and that digitalization is finally arriving in the energy sector," Mitter continues. For 2024, the company plans to maintain production productivity at this high level and thus further advance the digitalization of the energy sector.
