Upvolt grows by partnering with and acquiring experienced regional installers, then upgrading the delivery layer – design tools, operational workflows and customer journey. CEO Alex Lomax’s point is clear: the UK has great local operators, but scaling reliability nationwide needs modern systems and a bigger platform.
The UK has invested in renewables like wind and solar, but transmission and distribution upgrades are lagging. That gap drives curtailment and delays, and it’s why homes and businesses need to play a bigger role through batteries and better control, not just more megawatts.
G100 is about proven controllability of equipment so DNOs can manage local grid constraints. If a system crosses a size threshold, installers submit a G99 application and DNOs decide on export or import limits. G100-2 expands the logic to more integrated setups like multiple inverters plus power management and smart meters.
Export limits affect most projects on paper, but Alex argues the practical impact is often smaller than customers fear. Good design choices – on-site electrical checks, buffering with batteries and load-led planning – can keep customer value intact even under constraints.
“People hear ‘limitation’ and assume they can’t do anything. In practice, it’s usually a cap on how much you can export at one time.”
“We’re in the middle of an evolution, and it’s pivotal for transparency, control and real benefits without burdening the owner.”
“Large infrastructure projects are part of the solution, but they can’t be the whole solution.”
